It is true that chrocheted clothing has never been the type of wear that fashionistas would go crazy about. It has not been very popular for several reasons. First of all, it is almost impossible to create a really good quality chrocheted piece that would keep a nice shape while on. So, no matter how intricate the design is, it is a safer bet to use chrocheted lace as country table cloth rather than a a piece of clothing. Secondly, chrocheted clothing has always been associated with a laid back simple country style, which is quite the opposite of refined or sophisticated.

A sojourn of style that had its origins in French Colonial Vietnamese art and civilization found its way to California, thanks to a collective dream to create a fashion statement based more on culture than cliche. The vision, inspired by the color, sights and artistry centered in the city of Danang, Southeast Asia’s cultural hub, soon spang to life in the form of an eclectic clothing collection.

Da-Nang Shorts in Camo and Pink (above)

Da-Nang, which emgerged in January 2003, initially took flight through some witty pieces with military fits and eye catching embroidery details. However, the design team recognized that the line had a greater life of its own beyond the trend that launched it into prominence with celebrities and fashionistas. What Da-Nang is all about now and in the future is body-flattering silhouettes, enlivened with a wide spectrum of vibrant colors and a mixture of fabrics.

Da-Nang Dress, Camo Floral Print (above)

With the California-bred notion of dressed-down elegance, fusing with both European and Asian-inspired charm, the subsequent collection for men, women and childeren surface as bohemian, comfortable and vintage in the best possible ways – as if you owned these pieces your entire life.

Dianne von Furstenberg Summer 2009 Collection is once again a total success. If is very feminine, elegant, vivid and incorporates popular fashion trends, forms and colors. It features popular this season black-and-white zevra print and one-shoulder neckline. For a complete look, you may add bold red or gold earrings and your favorite bangle bracelets.

Gaby Basora was born in Chicago. Her great grandfather was a tailor. When she was a child, her family moved to Seattle, where her mother opened an art house movie theater in the now gentrified Pike Place Market. Gaby’s early childhood memories are all about roaming the stalls of the market with her sisters, soaking in the smells, sounds, colors and textures.

During her high school years, she moved to Amsterdam and then to Sarah Lawrence College. At the age of sixteen, she came to New York, where she began her studies at the university. Gaby Basora’s interest in fashion emerged naturally during those battles with her sisters or friends over what to wear, or the refashioning of odd bits found at the Salvation Army, or the desire to hold on to wrappers from an airplane nut package—blowing it up on the photocopier to see how it would look as fabric.

Gaby Basora of Tucker (above)

After college when she was not working, she lived on her bike. She constantly found herself riding to Brooklyn, to Jackson Heights, the Bronx, to find fabric stores, obscure clothing stores, restaurants, music, faces, smells. All the things that make memories and feed the desire to bring the moment back again in a shape or a feel. About ten years ago, Gaby Basora started working as a styling assistant as a favor to a friend and pretty soon styling her own jobs became her job.

Today, designer Christian Francis Roth celebrates his 40th birthday! Happy birthday from Laurela Fashion Blog! Born in New York City on February 12, 1969, Christian Francis Roth was a special student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, in 1986-87. Then in 1987-88, he continued his fashion studies at Parsons School of Design in New York, where he studied fashion design. Christian Francis Roth is currently married and has two daughters. His career began first as an apprentice and later, as an employee of Koos Van den Akker.

He produced his first small collection in Van den Akker studio in 1988. His first full collection did not appear until 1990. He closed his couture business in 1995 and initated bridge designs with backing of Equal 4 Inc. the same year. His awards include the Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis award recieved in 1990. He has been also selected an Honoree of Cotton Inc. “Celebration of American Style” show.

Designer Christian Francis Roth (above)

For the last eight years, Christian Francis Roth has been primarily consulting and designing primarily under the names of other fashion brands. Spring 2009 is going to the come-back season for Christian Francis, who is entering the fashion scene with his own new collection and brand, called “Francis”, that has been positioned between the upper-end contemporary and entry-level designer tiers during the September 2008 Fashion Week in New York.

Christian Francis Roth’s Spring 2009 spirited contemporary collection is emanates a feeling of fun sophistication that is rich in playful detailing, fresh color and offbeat charm. I particulaly like his Accost Polo dress, a preppy parody of shirts by such titans as Lacoste and Polo by Ralph Lauren. According to some rumors, the Accost dress might have been removed from production upon the advice of Christian Francis Roth’s legal councel. Funny as it may seem to a consumer, I think, I’d buy the dress, Lacoste and Ralph Lauren maynot be that receptive of a joke of an embroidered Lacoste alligator biting Ralph Lauren’s polo rider and worst of all all, both Lacoste and Ralph Lauren could conclude that as a legal challenge.

Accoste Dress from Francis Spring 2009 Collection (above)

Another item that caught my attention is a Kilp Pin Skirt adorned with prints of three oversized pins. This skirt reminds me of late eighties when oversized pins were in fashion. Women used to wear them in bunches, decorating with those pins every piece of their wadrobe, starting with laps of their jackets and ending with hats and bags. Nice skirt for size “0″ and size “2″ girls, maybe even size “4″. But I’d make the skirt longer, keep it above the knee length, but a bit longer, so that women with more sumtuous forms would feel comfortable going after that piece.
